Among the countless successful writers, and those with such aspirations, few are really known in every household. Over the past two decades, however, J.K. Rowling has succeeded in becoming one of the best-known writers of our time. And perhaps one of the most beloved women, with a skillful pen, in history. Although she is a novelist and philanthropist, as well as a film and television producer and screenwriter, Rowling’s fame comes from her best-selling book series, with over 500 million copies sold, worldwide.
She is now the first author to become a billionaire. She was honored as the most influential woman in Britain. But even with all that fame, she remains humble. She gives so much to so many charities that her billionaire status benefits others. To be so influential requires undeniable dedication and strong routines. Rowling lives by them. Maybe you, too, can benefit from them.
She focuses on self-development.
First of all, a healthy dose of self-awareness is needed, to take the necessary risks to allow you to grow. Those who constantly focus on getting better, smarter, stronger as human beings, will automatically reap the benefits. Rowling is the proof.
This means that you are allowed to stear your life in the direction you want it to go and, in the meantime, get the most out of the experience. Harvard students explained this: “Personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a checklist of acquisitions or achievements. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life.” Rowling pays attention to what change evokes in her and what helps her achieve her goals, two crucial parts of self-development.
She thrives on mistakes.
As for any writer, or creative professional, criticism is part of your work. To be honest, within each sector, it is important to develop a strong backbone and to include feedback in your work. Rowling believes in the power of failure and rises to the challenge. In the same Harvard speech, she shared this wisdom: “It’s impossible to live without failure, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well have not lived at all.”
She stays down to earth.
Millionaires, or like Rowling, billionaires, who have earned their own money, look at finance differently from those who grew up in wealth. They have worked hard for their money and therefore stay down to earth, regardless of the amount of money in their bank account.
She told Oprah that she is still struggling with her new lifestyle and all the certainties it brings. “Yeah, I know I’ll be rich forever now, but I haven’t quite figured that out yet. When I was pregnant with my son, I had money worries, even though it was completely irrational. Maybe it was because of the stress of the moment.
She imagines a better world.
“We don’t need magic to make the world a better place. We have the power to imagine it better.” Is there anything fundamentally more important than positivity? Regardless of your career plans, friendships or family ties, hope is essential to happiness and progress. Rowling believes it’s her job to make the world a better place. “If you choose to use your status and influence to give a voice to those who have no voice, then you choose to identify not only with the powerful, but also with the powerless.” Therein lies the power of changing the world, as she said at Harvard.
