A unique drumband from North America’s Long Island has made history by performing during ‘Labor Day’ weekend. They preformed at the World Championships for Drum Corps Associates, which are held in Williamsport, in the state of Pennsylvania.
Thanks to the crowdfunding action that soon went viral, the drummers, under the name ‘FREE Players Drum & Bugle Corps’, have managed to play at this gigantic event and even make a nice donation.
The original goal that the group from Old Bethpage, a small village under the wing of New York City, had set was to be able to go to the prestigious World Championships for Drum Corps Associates (CDA). Donors who made their contribution via the GoFundMe page eventually brought in an extra 20%, with a final amount of more than $1,000.
On Friday, for the first time in their history, FREE brought on stage a banner woman, by the name of Lauren. The band gave a beautifully inspiring performance of the song “Pure Imagination”. It’s the first time that a band with mentally handicapped people with both drums and flugelhorns has been selected to play at the DCA World Championships.
DCA showed the world even more of the group’s performances at the opening ceremony through their social media channels. They are now all part of the daytime theater program of the non-profit organisation ‘Family Residences and Essential Enterprises’ of the city of New York.
They rehearse together once a week in their own town center hall in Old Bethpage and then perform at parades and other competitions held throughout the country. The championships in Williamsport will continue until next Sunday, after which the winner will be announced, but it is clear that the FREE players and their inspiring preparation have already stolen the show.
