With another exciting year of movies ahead of us, Hollywood is churning out ambitious adventures left and right. The film industry’s biggest names aim to make our experiences at the theater worth the price of admission and then some. From comic book movies to science-fiction flicks, here are the top five most anticipated movies of 2020.
1. Black Widow
Russian spy turned Avenger Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, was the first female superhero introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s been an inspirational role model for superhero and comic book fans for more than ten years. Before Marvel Studios begins its next saga introducing new characters and feuds, Black Widow is finally getting her first solo film.
Set as a prequel after the events of “Captain America: Civil War” and before “Avengers: Infinity War,” Romanoff reunites with former allies and adversaries to rectify a mysterious incident from her past.
“Black Widow” releases into theaters on April 24th, 2020.
2. Wonder Woman 1984
Director Patty Jenkins and actress Gal Gadot return to the big screen in the follow-up to Wonder Woman’s first big-screen adventure. Their first collaboration broke box office records and set a precedent for female-led comic book movies.
Their second action flick “Wonder Woman 1984” follows the Amazonian goddess Diana Prince in Washington D.C. as she reunites with her former love Steve Trevor and battles a persuasive entrepreneur who sparks chaos within the general public.
“Wonder Woman 1984” releases into theaters on June 5th, 2020.
The science fiction genre would not be the same without director Christopher Nolan’s ability to challenge the audiences’ imaginations. The plot of “Tenent” remains tightly under wraps. However, what we know is that the film centers on international espionage, where a cryptic organization entrusts a recruit with preventing World War III through the use of time travel.
Nolan has consistently left audiences on the edge of their seats with his ability to carefully craft stories and characters as a director and writer. There’s no doubt that “Tenet” will have the same effect.
“Tenet” releases into theaters on July 17, 2020
4. Bill & Ted Face the Music
In 1989, actors Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter teamed up for a science-fiction comedy “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” The first film and its sequel “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” has lived on with cult audiences.
A mysterious being from the future warns the would-be-rockers turned dads William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq. and Theodore “Ted” Logan about Earth’s inevitable doom. The duo joins forces to create a 78-minute song to full their musical destiny and save the planet.
After a lengthy pre-production process that halted the film’s development on several occasions, this third film is going to be a must-see for fans of comedy and the franchise.
“Bill & Ted Face the Music” releases into theaters on August 21st, 2020.
More than thirty years ago, director David Lynch attempted to bring author Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel “Dune” to life on the big screen to the chagrin of the book’s fans. Now, director Denis Villeneuve is attempting to re-adapt the novel, just in time to close out the year of exciting movies in 2020.
Set in the future, a young man Paul Atreides and his family accept the stewardship of the planet Arrakis. On the surface, the planet appears to be an inhospitable desert wasteland, but it is the only planet that produces melange, or “the spice,” that enables space navigation, enhances mental abilities, and extends life. As the new stewards of Arrakis, the family must unite and fend off multiple factions of the empire as they struggle to control the planet and its resources.
With notable progression in special effects since the first adaptation in 1984, the reboot is aiming to take audiences on a wild ride that’s never been attempted before.
“Dune” releases into theaters on December 18th, 2020.
